The district is ranked in the top 10 across the UK for hygiene inspections – with 520 premises out of 874 boasting a five star rating.

The National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme scores businesses that serve food between zero and five, with the former meaning urgent improvement is necessary and the latter meaning the establishment is 'very good'.

Some 99 per cent of dining spots were rated generally satisfactory, good or very good.

And Cannock does not have a single establishment with a rating of zero, compared to dozens across the Black Country.

In comparison 152 businesses in neighbouring Walsall were given a rating of one, compared to just eight premises in Cannock Chase.

Only six out of the 874 establishments in Cannock Chase were given a rating of two, meaning 860 have at least a 'generally satisfactory' hygiene.

Of these, some 604, or 69 per cent, have ratings of four or five meaning they are 'good' or 'very good'.

Councillor Muriel Davis, health and wellbeing portfolio leader for Cannock Chase District Council, said: "This is testament to the good work and efforts of our officers and the vast majority of responsible businesses who try hard to ensure the correct procedures are being followed and that all hygiene standards meet legal requirements."

One of those to be praised for its hygiene with its maximum score was Bridgtown Chippy on North Street.

Anthelo Kristo, the owner of the chip shop, said: "We took over the chip shop in 2014 and at that time it had a 3 rating.

"We appreciate the time that Cannock Chase Council has given us to offer advice."

Others to receive a rating of five in Cannock Chase include the Village Cafe in Chadsmoor and the KFC on East Cannock Road in Hednesford.
