The road was closed for drivers heading north between Junction 4 near Coleshill and Junction 5 for Castle Bromwich from 11.30.

Police negotiators were talking to the man, who a force spokesman said was on the wrong side of the overhead bridge.

The M42 Junction 7 northbound entry sliproad onto the M6 was also closed, as was the M6 entry road at 3A, causing major delays as motorists were diverted off the motorway at Junction 4 towards the M42 and M6 Toll.

Police advised motorists to avoid the area and recommended using the M6 Toll instead.

By 2.15pm the incident had been resolved and all lanes were back open.
