Uber taxis has no current plans for Cannock or Stafford expansion
Online taxi firm Uber will not be coming to Cannock Chase or Stafford for the foreseeable future, the firm has said.
The company recently launched in Stoke-on-Trent but currently has 'no plans to expand' into Stafford or Cannock Chase, bosses have revealed.
It is a blow for the towns as Uber launched across the Black Country back in May.
Uber allows customers to order a taxi using an app on their smart phone or computer.
Using GPS tracking technology, users can book a journey and pay for their fare online.
The app – which is available on Android and iOS – pitches itself as a safe and reliable way to get on-demand rides in most of the world's major cities.
A spokesman for the firm, said: "Uber is fully regulated in the UK and requires an operating license from the local council to begin operations.
"We have not yet applied for a licence in Stafford and Cannock Chase and currently have no plans to expand there.
"At the moment, we're focused on the recent launch in Stoke-on-Trent and the more than 20 towns and cities we already operate in across the UK including London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle, Sheffield, Bristol, Merseyside, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Portsmouth, Leicester, Belfast, Cardiff, Southampton, Sunderland and parts of the Home Counties."
Councillor George Adamson, leader of Cannock Chase District Council, admitted he was 'disappointed' by the news and said he thought the decision was 'strange'.
He said: "I thought now would have been a good time to come to Cannock with the development of Mill Green.
"It seems a strange decision to me.
"Our economy is booming and that is only going to be boosted by Mill Green.
"It is slightly disappointing, as I said I thought now would have been a good time to come."
The firm launched in Stoke-on-Trent last week with the area's general manager, Fouzan Ali, saying the firm was 'really excited' to get going in the north of the county.
