Water was streaming through the centre's ceiling and covered the floor outside Peacocks, despite the buckets and towels laid out by staff.

Security evacuated customers and workers at around 3.30pm, leaving people to shelter at nearby shops on Cleveland Street.

This video, titled 'Welcome to the Wulfrun Centre', was taken at 4.10pm and shows just how wet the corridor was outside Greggs.

Elsewhere, cars were stranded and homes were flooded as rain swept across the region.
