Research by Halifax ranked Stourbridge as the 10th priciest place per square metre in the UK. The average property price per square metre in the town is £1,943 – but that figure is dwarfed by the most expensive places in Britain, which are all in London, with Kensington and Chelsea priciest at £11,321 per square metre.

Stourbridge sneaks into the top 10 from outside southern England alongside other West Midlands addresses including Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Bromsgrove.

The average home in Britain now costs £2,216 per square metre while in some parts of London buyers face paying more than £11,000 for just one square metre of a property.

The less expensive end of the property market is Lanark in Scotland, Llanelli and Neath in Wales, and Accrington and Hartlepool in northern England, which all have average house prices per square metre around the £1,000 mark.

Chris Gowland, mortgages director at Halifax, said: "House price per square metre can be a useful comparison measure as it helps to adjust for differences in the size and type of properties between locations. Parts of central London are substantially more expensive than anywhere else in the country."
