Proposals for a new Travelodge have been submitted to Sandwell Council.

The new 78-bed hotel will be built next to the new West Bromwich Building Society base just off the A41 if it gets the green light from planners.

According to developers Hinton Group, the hotel will create 25 full and part-time jobs if it is built, while more than 80 jobs will be created during construction.

Councillor Preet Gill said she welcomed the plans, which were 'perfect' for the location.

She told the Express & Star: "I think this is a brilliant idea and I really welcome it.

"There's been a lot of work in West Bromwich recently with New Square opening and a lot of effort has gone in.

"Having a hotel there given how close the football ground is is perfect. It will be good for the local economy and positive for jobs.

"For Sandwell as a whole we need investment - it needs to be a place where people come and visit.

"That site is not far from other areas and is well linked."

A design and access statement submitted as part of the planning package states: "The application site is set back from and fronting Providence Place adjacent to the aforementioned West Bromwich Building Society office building.

"It proposes a 78-bedroom hotel, which has been pre-let to Travelodge Hotels Ltd.

"The development will have a positive effect on the character of the locality, replacing a vacant brownfield site with a modern development, providing a complementary usage to the adjacent developments.

"The proposal accords with the principles of sustainable development and the policies for regeneration and making the best use of previously developed land."

If planning permission is granted for the hotel, design bosses said it will take 34 weeks to build.

Andy Elwell from developers Hinton Group, based in Bromsgrove, said: "Development of the 78 bed hotel at Providence Place will not only look to be a welcomed addition to the regeneration of West Bromwich town centre but also a convenient hub in its prime location with direct access to the M6/M5 links and Birmingham city centre."
