DX Freight super-hub for Essington is refused
Residents have won their battle to stop a £36 million distribution centre being built in their village.
Plans by DX Group for a 44-acre site on Hobnock Road, Essington - described as a super-hub - were thrown out by South Staffordshire Council planning committee tonight.
The committee voted 21 against and 12 in favour of the plans.
The former Nightfreight business had hoped to have a new centre open by next summer, with the aim of transferring staff from its two sites in Willenhall.
It had scaled down its plans from an initial application last August following concerns from villagers during a public consultation. They also revised the overall design.
But it met with fierce opposition from the start with protestors insisting it 'could kill the village'.
South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson held a referendum, where 872 households responded, 99 per cent agreeing the plans should not go ahead.
