The Muslim Welfare Society submitted a proposal to revamp the existing place of worship at Bills Street, Darlaston.
Planning bosses have now given the scheme the go-ahead.
The plans include building a new two-storey extension to the main building which will make it more accessible for disabled people as well as creating a dedicated entrance for children.
The flat roof on the mosque will be replaced by a pitched roof.
A new library and resource centre will also be built on the site but this will replace an existing facility.
St Matthews ward councillor Mohammed Arif said: "The building is not in the best condition these days and this application is needed."
