Five people were seriously injured on the ride when their carriage collided with a stationary carriage on the same track, including two women who had legs amputated after the crash on June 2 last year.

And the new images show how their carriage was left twisted and mangled, with huge dents evident in the metalwork in front of the seats.

Meanwhile a video released by HSE shows the carriage being removed from the Smiler and track testing taking place on the ride.

Alton Towers' owner Merlin today pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations over the crash at North Staffordshire Justice Centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The company was told to expect a 'very large fine' by District Judge Jack McGarva.

Neil Craig, head of operations for HSE in the Midlands said: "We welcome the guilty plea entered by Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd. Merlin has acknowledged that it failed in its legal duty to protect people on the Smiler ride.

"Those injured on June 2 last year had every right to expect a carefree and fun day out.

"The incident was profoundly distressing for everyone involved, both physically and mentally. It left some with life changing injuries.

"We hope this first milestone will help those affected to continue their recovery from this tragic incident."
