'Somebody is going to be killed': Neighbours demand action after car ploughs through walls

Residents are demanding action after a car mounted a pavement and smashed through two walls outside houses in Bilston.

Yesterday morning at around 7.50am, the driver of a silver Vauxhall Astra lost control of his vehicle and ploughed through the walls on Woodcross Lane, leaving a trail of debris.

Bricks smashed through the windows of a parked car and a mark from another brick on the wall of one of the houses showed it was just inches from flying through a living room window.

Residents said it wasn't the first time such a crash had happened.

Glenn Bryan Snr, who lives at one of the houses where the damage was done, said: "I heard this smash, it was so loud. I didn't want to look outside because I was scared what I was going to see.

"Luckily the people in the car were OK. But my wife had took the bins out just five minutes before. She could have quite easily been hit. People don't realise the speed they're carrying when they go over the brow of the hill.

"They've hit the wall with some force.

"One of these days somebody is going to be killed. They need to put speed humps in or something. I've had my car smashed into twice.

"Normally they wait for something terrible to happen before something is done."

His son, also named Glenn, added: "People just come flying down here when it's a blind road.

"If someone was walking down the road with a pram or something, they wouldn't have stood a chance.

"They need to do something about this road. People even come speeding down here when the weather's bad, we've seen them when it's been snowing. I remember seeing one time when someone hit the kerb on the opposite side and they could have easily gone over the railing and crashed into the kids playing on the field."

Next-door neighbour Rob Coulter, who has lived there for 16 years, said: "My wall was hit as well, probably a couple of years ago, a girl was driving. Apparently she lost her brakes.

"We need the council to put speed humps in to slow people down, but they take no notice of us. Someone walking along the road could have been hit and killed. It'll probably take something like that to happen before anything is done, but by then it'll be too late.

"There has been a few crashes here as well as this latest one. Someone went into the wall of the (Murray's) chemists a few years ago.

"Fortunately I don't think anyone was too badly hurt this time, but it's only a matter of time before they are."

The male driver and female passenger of the Vauxhall Astra were taken to New Cross Hospital to be checked over after the crash.
