The remaining residential development land at the £176 million Bilston Urban Village site is set to be marketed by Wolverhampton council from next month.

The advanced works programme undertaken by the council to make the brownfield land ready for development will be completed at the beginning of May.

This will make a further 27 acres of land available to residential developers to build up to 400 new homes in a quality environment, alongside new employment areas and leisure facilities on other parts of the urban village site.

And the marketing process for the land has now been approved by the council's cabinet (resources) panel.

Councillor John Reynolds, the council's cabinet member for city economy, said: "This is an exciting time in the Bilston Urban Village project.

"The advanced works programme is nearing completion and has proved successful in bringing back into use this brownfield land.

"Informal discussions last year suggest there will be strong competition between developers for these residential plots and we look forward to seeing their proposals.

"The urban village will be a key part of the wider regeneration of the city, bringing new homes, new jobs and more investment. It demonstrates our commitment to Bilston and ensures it will continue to be a thriving area."

Meanwhile, this spring Kier will begin building 78 units comprising one, two, three and four-bedroom properties on the first two plots, located on the west side of Dudley Street either side of the entrance into Carder Crescent.

The huge scheme has already seen the building of the Bert Williams Leisure Centre and South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy, the creation of a commercial development plot fronting the Black Country Route and the direct pedestrian linkage of the site with the town centre.

The full urban village proposals were unveiled in March 2014.

Plans also include the removal of the former railway embankment between Coseley Road and South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy and new road junctions in Coseley Road and Highfields Road.
