'Fone Gaint' has moved into one of the Ancient High House retail units on Greengate Street in Stafford.

But it's the spelling of its name that has made the phone accessories business a hot topic on social media and is leaving shoppers baffled.

The temporary sign – which should read 'Fone Giant' – is believed to have gone up earlier this week.

A picture of the unit was placed on Facebook in a welcome message by nearby restaurant and hotel, The Swan.

"Welcome to Stafford to our new neighbour in The Ancient High House retail unit," the message read. "We are a little confused however over what you're called?"

The light-hearted post, which was described as banter by management, was liked more than 80 times and shared more than 10 times.

In a reply to another user, The Swan Facebook page said it was great to see the retail unit filled again.

They joked: "Congratulations to them because we're advertising them on our site for free – crafty!"

The fun continued in the comments. Facebook user Jack Sparra said: "Very clever marketing. Who would be talking about it if it was spelt correctly?"

Ryan Holmes, another social media user, added: "It says 'temporary sign' in the corner. Let's hope they get the next one right."

Fone Gaint is the latest in a string of shops that have occupied this Ancient High House retail unit.

Bosses at the shop, which also carries out repairs and unlocks phones, were not available to comment.
