Ross Workman, aged 51, former head at Oldswinford CoE Primary School in Stourbridge, admitted six charges of making an indecent photograph or pseudo photograph of a child.

At Wolverhampton Crown Court on Wednesday he was given a three-year community order, put on the Sex Offenders Register and banned from working with children.

The images featured youngsters aged between eight and 12 but were they had been downloaded between January 5 and March 7, 2011, before he became headteacher.

And the NSPCC today spoke out about Workman's vile crimes.

Spokesman Adam Burling said: "It is deeply shocking that someone so trusted and respected by pupils and parents would commit these vile crimes.

"The children in these images are victims of sexual abuse which can destroy their lives. Workman has only helped fuel this industry and the demand for those images."

New head Jenny Birchall said the school was hoping to move on from the unwanted publicity Workman's actions brought.

She said: "Mr Workman has not worked for the authority or this school for some time. There is no suggestion or evidence that the school, its staff, or the pupils of our school are involved in any way. Our school continues as normal, and I hope this will be a fresh chapter for Oldswinford CoE Primary."
