Zoe Shapiro tragedy: Schoolgirl died after being hit on pedestrian crossing

A teenage girl died after she was hit by a van while walking across a pedestrian crossing, an inquest heard.

Zoe Shapiro suffered head and neck injuries in the crash and could not be saved.

An inquest opening at Smethwick Council House heard how the 17-year-old was 'in collision with a van 'as she tried to cross the road in Great Barr near her home on February 24.

She was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital but died from her injuries.

The Q3 Academy pupil's death led to an outpouring of grief from friends and family.

The academy's principal described Zoe as 'wonderful young lady', while floral tributes were left in the school's memorial garden.

Stephen Binsley, senior coroner's officer, said: "Zoe was crossing the A34 Birmingham Road using a pedestrian crossing at around 8.30am on February 24.

"During the crossing she was in collision with a van. She was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital but sadly died."

A police investigation has been launched. A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and subsequently bailed.

Black Country coroner Mr Zafar Siddique adjourned the inquest until a full hearing on April 15.
