Planning row over new Stafford Aldi

A new Aldi supermarket being built in Stafford has sparked yet another planning row.

The borough council has granted permission for the shop at the former Freedom Caravans site on Lichfield Road and it is due to be opened next month.

But local Councillor Ray Barron has 'called in' the scheme for the third time claiming the retail giant has changed the original development considerably.

The latest issues surround the removal of a large hedge which bordered flood planes at Radford Bank and a fence which created a barrier between the store and homes on Windsor Road.

Councillor Barron said: "It is not a happy situation for all of the residents in the area who have formed a committee and have asked me to call it in on their behalf.

"It is also a lot bigger than we thought it would be."

Previous wrangles have surrounded the location of a large Aldi sign facing Windsor Street and a path which wasn't part of the original scheme.

Planners will meet at the site on Monday to discuss the issues.
