Staffordshire Fire Service jobs at risk in £1.34m cuts

Jobs across Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service are at risk over the next twelve months as the force attempts to make £1.34 million of savings.

Last year the service axed more than 40 posts which saw reductions to cover at Cannock and Rugeley stations.

Over the past four years, the service has saved £6 million through cuts and a switch towards a more preventive approach to fire safety in the community, but more is needed due to Government grant cuts.

Peter Dartford, chief fire officer with the service claimed the force would 'do everything to ensure there is as minimal impact on livelihoods as possible' but said there would be 'less posts' across the service in a years time.

He said: "We are still facing difficult financial challenges, with a reduction of £1.43 million in our Revenue Support Grant during 2016/17, rising to an overall reduction of £4.8 million by 2019/20.

"The simple truth is that there will be less posts within the force in a years time.

"All of our previous cuts have come through either retirements or voluntary redundancy and we will do everything to ensure there is minimal impact on livelihoods as possible."
