Driver racing at 90mph in 40mph zone seriously injured woman in smash

A Wolverhampton driver who raced another man at 90mph in a 40mph zone in a high-powered Mercedes smashed into a woman's car, leaving her with serious injuries, a court heard.

The engine block of the victim's Audi was propelled 130 yards away in the crash in Wolverhampton Road, Oldbury, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

The hearing was told Vaqaas Khan, aged 30, had been engaging in a race in his Mercedes C63 against another man who hasn't been traced, and who was also in a fast Mercedes, when the smash happened on September 21, 2014.

Prosecutor Mr Paul Spratt told the court: "He accepts that he was driving at 90mph in a 40mph zone.

"He claims that shortly before the collision he stopped racing and had reduced his speed, but wasn't able to prevent the crash from happening.

Khan, of Lea Road, Penn Fields, who MoTs cars for a living at the garage he owns, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. No further details of the victim or her injuries were given to the court.

Defence barrister Gurdeep Garcha told Judge Stephen Thomas: "He accepts the prosecution experts' findings. He is 30 years old and has no previous convictions.

"I would ask you to wait for pre-sentence background reports before passing sentence."

Judge Thomas told Khan: "You have pleaded guilty to a serious matter.

"A custodial sentence is almost inevitable.

"I adjourn this matter for pre-sentence reports."

He will be sentenced on March 11 at Wolverhampton Crown Court and has been disqualified from driving in the interim.
