Parking limits near Halesowen College after chaos complaints

Parking restrictions will be introduced on roads clogged with cars near a Halesowen College campus following complaints from residents.

Campaigners have long demanded action to tackle problem parking near the campus off Whittingham Road.

A raft of parking bans and restrictions were initially tabled by Dudley Council in response to the problem last year.

But these have been scaled back after a petition by residents who urged highways chiefs to rethink the plans.

Now fresh proposals for no waiting restrictions in Whittingham Road and Newfield Crescent have been revealed. While council bosses are also due to consider taking action on other streets including Furnace Lane and Furnace Hill in the future.

People who live along the road have described it as a 'nightmare'

If the new scheme is approved, there would be limited waiting in Whittingham Road between 7am until 7pm to prevent people from parking on the roadside all day.

While a no-waiting restriction would be in place in place in Newfield Crescent between 10am and 11am and between 2pm and 3pm.

People living in the streets say there has been a problem with people parking up all day in the roads outside homes.

Tony Woodcock, who has lived in the road for over 50 years, said: "It is chaos down this road from 8.30am, you've got cars parking directly opposite each other and 10 to 15 coaches attempting to squeeze through, which causes a huge jam.

"I'd love to see more parking bans put in place, but it's been going on for so many years now, everyone who lives down here just accepts it for what it is.

"Any parking improvements by the council will always be welcomed by residents."

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said: "It can be quite dangerous to even attempt to pull off your drive as you never know what's coming. I'm happy something might now be finally done about it, it's been a constant battle for years.

Original plans saw the council seek to introduce parking bans for periods of the day.

These included parts of Whittingham Road, Greenbush Drive, Woodridge Road, Furnace Lane, Furnace Hill, Newfield Lane and Newfield Crescent.

Other parking restrictions were also tabled in the same roads as part of the wider proposals.

But 31 residents wrote into the council objecting to the proposals and a 51-strong petition was handed in.

A final decision will be made on the scheme on February 1 by Councillor Hilary Bills.
