WATCH: Calls to save eye-catching graffiti hailed as ray of sunshine

Calls have been made to preserve some eye-catching graffiti which has decorated temporary boarding at a building site in Cannock for several months.

The murals appeared on the temporary fencing boards adjoining Cannock Road and Burgoyne Street in Chadsmoor last August and have become a regular talking point among locals ever since.

They were painted in a joint project between South Staffordshire College and Charmford Homes, which is developing the housing there.

Resident Lilian Chandler, aged 80, and from Hednesford, said the graffiti should be displayed permanently in the area.

She said:"I think it will be a shame if it is removed I hope it doesn't go.

"They have got Hednesford Park haven't they, I know people want to keep it as natural as possible but surely there is somewhere in the background it could be put on display.

"It was like a little ray of sunshine among the doom and gloom when I saw it. It has given people a little bit of pleasure."

County Councillor Derek Davis, who represents Chadsmoor, said that reaction to the graffiti has been mostly positive although he said one resident had complained.

He said: "As far as I am concerned it has added a bit of fun to the area and a bit of community spirit.

"It might not be what everyone wants but at least it is meaningful. It is better than the drab boards you usually get.

"I have heard very little complaint about it other than perhaps from one person."

Although he was sceptical as to whether the artwork could become a permanent fixture in the town.

Councillor Davis added: "It has not been put on what I would call good wood and it has not been put on a proper wall. This is plywood.

"I think it was simply put on during the building period. In terms of whether it would be kept long term I can't think of anywhere I would like to put it. I have seen it a lot it is only on scrap wood.

"Also it may get smashed up. I don't think its a good idea."
