The group are taking part in a 30-day regime at Chris Jewkes Fitness in Tettenhall to lose weight and get fit. The Express & Star will be keeping tabs on their progress – or otherwise – with the winner being the one who loses the most weight.

Damon Stanton from Lanesfield is a lover of junk food and a self-confessed stranger to exercise.

"I never do any exercise and I never eat one burger when I can eat two," said the 31-year-old factory worker from Wolverhampton. But family health issues have been weighing heavily on his mind of late, with hsi father suffering his second heart attack, at 58, on Boxing Day.

Driver Frank O'Halloran blames his job, which involves sitting behind the wheel of his HGV lorry for eight hours a day, for piling on the pounds. Weighing in at 18st, he is looking to make a complete lifestyle change.

"Being on the road all the time, it's easy to get used to a big greasy breakfast in the morning and then nipping into a cafe for some chocolate," said the 57-year-old from Marston Road, Dudley.

Bus driver Andrew Doyle has a very important reason for wanting to lose weight and get fit – he and wife Kerry are hoping to become foster carers.

At 28st, he is the heaviest of the group but hopes having the support of the gym will help where other weight loss efforts have failed.

Payroll manager Laura Piekos is the only female taking part. The 56-year-old from Dudley had to ease up on her running last year in order to carry out renovation work on her new home.
