4,600 join fight to stop housing on village plot

More than 4,600 people have signed a petition to stop a developer building on a village plot - and the document will now be handed presented to the House of Commons next week.

South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson, who has led the campaign, is urging residents to return their petition forms this week if they have not already done so.

A copy of the petition, against an attempt to build 136 homes on a green-belt site in Landywood Lane, Great Wyrley, will also be handed to South Staffordshire District Council. A similar bid was rejected in 2013 after residents put up a fight.

Villagers in Cheslyn Hay have joined in the campaign as the proposed site would join the gap between the two villages.

Dozens of residents helped distribute petition forms to 8,000 homes across the area in October.

Mr Williamson said: "An overwhelming number of people do not want this development. It will ruin the character of the villages of Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay. I hope that both the council and the planning inspectorate, if the proposals reach that stage, will listen to voice of local people.

"I am delighted that almost 4,600 people have already returned their petitions but I would encourage all residents, who have not done so already, to fill in the petition and return it via the freepost envelope before next Monday.

"It is abundantly clear from the results so far that residents do not want this development. It's so important that we have as many signatures as possible to show the council that this development is not wanted by those who live in Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay."

The proposal, by Cannock-based KGL Holdings, includes 90 park-and-ride spaces for Landywood station, 17 allotments and 23 acres of public park.
