West Bromwich supermarket made a Lidl bigger

The expansion of a supermarket in West Bromwich town centre is now gathering pace.

Supermarket chain Lidl is creating 10 jobs by building a bigger store at its present site in High Street, close to Carter's Green.

The structure of the new supermarket is now in place and the roof is complete.

Large glass panels have been installed around part of the outside of the building surrounded by steel girders.

The old branch, based on the site of a former car dealership, has been completely redeveloped during the project.

Bosses say the new shop will employ more than 10 additional workers. An opening date has yet to be revealed.

But officials say they are investing several million pounds in the scheme benefitting the area.

The new supermarket will have a 'more efficient' layout according to officials.

There will be more space between aisles and checkouts and the shop will be able to stock a larger amount of products.

The new store, which would be single-storey, would cover an area measuring around 23,034 sq ft.

It will have a car park with 90 parking spaces – fewer than the original 166 but bosses say they feel the number is sufficient according to demand.

The new supermarket represents the latest investment in Sandwell made but the flourishing retailer.

Up to 500 jobs will be created after Lidl revealed plans to build a distribution centre near to the M6 in Wednesbury. The proposed centre will measure 450,000 sq ft, the equivalent of six professional football pitches, and be built on land near to junction nine.

Bosses from the retailer said the new centre would spearhead future expansion across the entire region and will serve stores across the region.

It will create managerial and office-based jobs in addition to full-time warehouse roles operating on a three-shift basis, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
