Two-month old golden labrador retriever Wilson will be trained for Guide Dogs for the Blind after David Wilson Homes paid for his tuition to become a fully-fledged helper.

The homebuilder has a strong affiliation with Guide Dogs having first sponsored a puppy more than 20 years ago.

Wilson was part of a litter of eight puppies, and his formal training will begin when he is around 14 months old.

It will last for three to nine months. Guide dogs can provide years of active service for their owner before retiring around the age of 10.

Steve Barton, senior sales manager at David Wilson Homes Mercia, said: "Our symbol is a Golden Retriever so we have always felt a very strong connection with Guide Dogs.

"We have sponsored a number of puppies over the years and hope our latest donation will further strengthen our ties with the charity and the hugely important work it carries out."

David Wilson Homes recently hosted a Dinner in the Dark event at its development Woodthorne on Wergs Road in Wolverhampton.

Guests included Kingswinford resident Lisa Wharton, who is partially sighted, and her dog Orla and Daniel Myatt, a community fundraiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

They were joined by staff from David Wilson Homes who took part in a series of everyday tasks, while blindfolded, to experience what it is like to live with a visual impairment.

The event was held to coincide with National Guide Dogs Week.
