From Ikea to icon for Eddie Redmayne

One minute he's shopping in Ikea in Wednesbury, the next he's gracing the front pages of national magazines.

Actor Eddie Redmayne's sense of style clearly isn't just limited to his choice of furniture – he has now been named the best dressed male of 2016, beating the likes of David Beckham, DJ Nick Grimshaw and singer Sam Smith to the coveted top slot.

The 33-year-old British actor and Academy Award winner was given the honour by GQ magazine.

And it's easy to see why. Described by Elton John, no less, as an elegant mixture of Cary Grant and Fred Astaire, he even cuts a dash wandering round Ikea, taking time out to pose with eagle-eyed fans while the rest of us are in a daze, trying to find a chest of drawers with an unpronounceable name.

Spotted by unsuspecting shoppers last week, Redmayne was wearing a subtly sophisticated brown trilby and a herringbone scarf with traditional dark green Barbour jacket. He stood out from the crowd and his appearance, with a trolley full of flat-pack furniture, caused a stir on chatrooms.

He was spotted by the Hodgkiss family from Telford who managed to grab a photo with him.

Not shy to experiment with colours and textures, Redmayne has frequently been photographed in blue, with his navy and black-checked suit making an impact at the premiere of the Theory of Everything, and his all-peppermint suit causing a stir at the Toronto film festival.

He even posed at last year's Wimbledon in bright blue chinos. Redmayne also swept the board at the last year's Oscars for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the Theory of Everything, dressed in the quintessential classic Cambridge student attire.

It seems the star is the man of moment when it comes to dressing for the part – be that on screen, off screen and doing the shopping.
