The Express & Star revealed yesterday that the shop will close in January due to the redevelopment of the shopping centre.

Notices were put in shop windows on Tuesday announcing the closure, which will affect around 20 jobs.

A WHSmith spokesperson said today: "We can confirm that the WHSmith store in Wolverhampton will close in January due to the redevelopment of the shopping centre.

"We are disappointed to lose our presence in the town, however we will continue to look for another suitable and viable location. We would like to thank all of our customers for their custom."

The current store will close at 5.30pm on January 13. This will make the nearest store almost 10 miles away in Market Place, Cannock.

Wolverhampton's city assets boss, Councillor Peter Bilson, has said he would be 'very surprised' if the retailer did not return after the redevelopment work.

The £35 million redevelopment of the Mander Centre will be anchored by a 90,000 sq ft Debenhams spanning three floors, which is set to open in October 2017.
