Planning bosses at Cannock Chase Council approved the Mill Green Designer Outlet Village proposals at the end of last month.

The scheme was then passed up to the Secretary of State who today has decided not to 'call-in' the planning application, which has given the council the green light to proceed with approval in the New Year.

Leader of the council George Adamson said: "I am delighted that the Secretary of State has decided to support the local decision to grant consent for the Mill Green Designer Outlet Village.

"This is the best news that this district has received for many years and I look forward to the opening of the first phase during 2018."

The planning application for the outlet village was submitted in February this year by development partners U+I (formerly Development Securities) and Rioja Developments.

There will be 130 shops, restaurants, a play area and a visitor centre and at 23,758 sq m will be the biggest development of its kind in the West Midlands region.

The first phase of the development could be open in 2018.
