Walsall father-of-four jailed for drug dealing
A cocaine and heroin dealer selling drugs to an addict in his car has been jailed for three years.
Father-of-four Lewis Newman, from Walsall, was told by Judge Kristina Montgomery QC that if he continues to offend, he will see less of his family.
Wolverhampton Crown Court heard of how a well-known addict was spotted getting into 46-year-old Newman's car, before he was apprehended with the drugs which were estimated to have a street value of £340.
Prosecutor Phillip Brunt said: "On October 1, two police officers were at Victoria Avenue in Bloxwich when they came across a known drug user.
"She was observed getting into the passenger seat of a silver Ford car.
"The officers approached and searched the driver, Newman.
"He was found to have 36 wraps of crack cocaine and heroin.
"He admitted to police that he was dealing drugs.
"When he was interviewed by police, he said he had just been dealing for one day to try and get some extra money for his family.
"Police found no more drugs in his car or when they searched his house."
Newman, of Valley Road, Walsall, admitted to two counts of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs .
Newman also admitted one count of supplying Class A drugs. In mitigation, defence barrister Oliver Woolhouse, told the court he was a father-of-four who had pleaded guilty to the offences at the earliest opportunity.
"He admitted candidly to the police that he was motivated by financial gain," he said.
"He has four children, all of whom are under the age of seven.
"This is his first offence for a significant period of time.
"And that is largely down to being in a settled relationship and being a father.
"He is someone who has been honest and open with the probation service.
"He said that he was just dealing for one day, and from police searches in his car and at his house, that is consistent with what he admitted to police. He pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and I would invite your honour to give him credit for that," he added.
Judge Montgomery QC told Newman: "You seem to have no idea how to make money to support yourself and your family, other than stealing from people or dealing drugs.
"Your drug dealing just to put a few luxuries on the table for your family is going to deprive them of you for a long period of time.
"You don't think through the consequences of your actions.
"If you continue your life in this way, your family will see less and less of you," she added.
