A member of Stourbridge Golf Club, Dr Tweddell's father (also called Bill and also a doctor), was captain of Britain's Walker Cup team in 1928 and 1936.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: "Bill's son Nicholas has been in touch with the club and we were saddened to hear the news of his father's passing.

"Dr Tweddell gave over a decade of loyal and dedicated service to the club. The condolences of everyone at Wolves go to Bill's family and friends."

Former board member Roger Hipkiss, who worked with Dr Tweddell from 1982 to 1986, added: "Wherever you wanted him he'd be there, morning noon or night.

"He was fantastic person and a good friend to the players."

His funeral will take place at St Mary's Church, in Harvington, although the date has not yet been set.
