A three-hour programme of entertainment has also been cancelled.

The event, which was also marking the start of late-night shopping, was due to take place between 4-7pm at The Bridge, with activities including children's fairground rides, face painting and a 40ft bouncy slide.

A Walsall Council spokesman said: "Unfortunately the Christmas event has had to be cancelled due to bad weather and predicted gale force winds of up to 40mph.

"The Bridge is a very exposed spot and the safety of the public had to come first."

He said the entertainment would be rescheduled for another day, yet to be announced.
