Severe fire destroys Wednesbury flat

Two men were treated by paramedics after a severe fire broke out at a first floor flat in Wednesbury today.

Firefighters were called to Darlaston Road at around 7.30am.

Five pumps were needed to extinguish the blaze which completed gutted the flat.

Two men were treated by paramedics. One of them was suffering from smoke inhalation and burns to his hand.

The other had a cut to his arm.

Fire officials said both men had been outside the building and did not need to be rescued.

They were taken to Walsall Manor Hospital as a precaution.

Crews used three hose reels, a nine-metre ladder and a thermal camera while tackling the fire.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said the cause of the blaze was still being investigated.

"An investigation team is looking into what started the fire," she said.

"Everyone in the flat has been accounted for."

Firefighters took to social media to warn drivers to avoid the area if possible due to heavy traffic around Darlaston Road and Pinfold Street.

No other residents had to be evacuated because of the fire.
