Mr Wescott, aged 22, was discovered on the A451 Ringway between the bus depot Island and Comberton Hill island at just after 5am this morning.

He was taken to hospital with injuries to his head and abdomen but later died. His next of kin have been informed.

Police are unsure of the circumstances that led to Mr Wescott sustaining his injuries but believe he was involved in a collision and that the incident may be linked to an altercation at a nightclub.

They are appealing for witnesses and said they are 'confident' that the driver would have known he had hit something.

Sergeant Craig Harris said: "Jason had been living in the area for the last year having found work in Kidderminster and was out with friends.

"As you would expect, his family are absolutely devastated and are desperate for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

"Jason's injuries were consistent with him being in a collision with a vehicle but we are currently looking at the possibility that there may have been an altercation prior to the collision.

"We believe the collision occurred at just after 5am. We are confident that the driver would have realised they had hit something but we remain open to the possibility that they may not have realised it was a person.

"We'd appeal to the driver to come forward because they are likely to have information vital to our investigation.

"We are also continuing to appeal for anyone who witnessed a disturbance outside Tribe nightclub on Green Street at around 4.50am to contact us as we are looking at the possibility that the two incidents could be linked."

Mr Westcott was originally from Weston-super-Mare.
