Rebecca Kandare killing: Probe into 'sickening' death of nine-month-old girl as parents await sentencing
An official probe into the 'sickening' death of a nine-month-old girl will reveal its findings 'in the coming weeks', it was announced today, as her parents were appearing in court to be sentenced for killing her.
Rebecca Kandare died after being starved and deprived of medical care in Wolverhampton. Her parents admitted killing their baby yesterday and will be sentenced today.
Chair of the Wolverhampton Safeguarding Children Board, Alan Coe, said: "It's extremely tragic.
"A serious case review has been carried out and an action plan developed. Many of these actions have already been acted upon."
The review findings will be published 'in the coming weeks'.
Councillor Milkinderpal Jaspal, chairman of the health scrutiny panel at Wolverhampton council, said: "No punishment is strong enough.
"What they have done is sickening. The whole of Wolverhampton is shocked and appalled.
"To deprive your own daughter of food and health care like they did is senseless. It turns my stomach inside out."
Wolverhampton North East MP Emma Reynolds said it was 'a shocking case of neglect' and called for an investigation to prevent 'future cases of such horrific abuse'.
Parents Brian Kandare, 29, and Precious Kandare, 37, of South Avenue, Wednesfield, pleaded guilty to manslaughter yesterday.
Brian, also known as Ngonidzashe, wore a grey jumper in the dock and sat next to Precious, who wore a mustard suit jacket.
The defendants had previously been charged with the murder of Rebecca, which they denied. That charge was later dropped and replaced with two counts of manslaughter.
They accepted the charge of manslaughter at a brief hearing at court yesterday. They both spoke only to confirm their names and their guilty pleas.
Baby Rebecca was rushed to New Cross Hospital when the alarm was raised about her condition but doctors couldn't save her.
Her parents were arrested soon afterwards.
