Reginald Stocking, aged 79, suffered horrific injuries including a fractured skull when his Peugeot 207 was stolen as he went to park up.

Grandfather-of-three Mr Stocking was then run over by his own car as the thief made a getaway – smashing into a concrete fence in the process, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

Andrew Jones, of Manley Close, West Bromwich, is on trial charged with robbery. Jones, aged 34, is also accused of stealing a TV from a home in Dudley just eight hours after the attack.

The jury was told how Mr Stocking was following his usual Sunday night routine after visiting Mecca Bingo in Oldbury.

He dropped his wife Sylvia off at their front door just after 9.20pm before driving around to park at a garage. However, Mr Adam Western, prosecuting, said Mr Stocking never got around to parking as his car was stolen and he was left in a pool of his own blood.

Mr Western said: "On May 10 on a car park off Chapel Street in West Bromwich, he was attacked and robbed of his car. He was left with brain damage and was admitted to the intensive treatment unit at Sandwell General Hospital and kept in hospital for three weeks."

The court heard Mr Stocking lost his memory after the attack, with a statement read out in court saying he 'just can't remember' anything about the robbery.

"The first thing I can remember is coming round in hospital and people talking to me," he said. "I just kept drifting in and out of consciousness. I can remember nothing about any of the night."

After the robbery, the court was told Jones stole a TV from Groveland Road, Dudley Port at around 3.10am on May 11 and dumped it at his girlfriend's flat in West Bromwich.

The court heard his ex-partner later came forward to give evidence and Mr Western said Jones had threatened her to try to get her to withdraw her statement. Jones pleads not guilty to robbery, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, burglary and witness intimidation. The trial continues.
