Ten-year-old Kaine Kitson, who attends Netherton CofE Primary School, is currently recovering in Birmingham's Children Hospital after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in April.

Kaine's school friends and teachers rallied around to raise money for the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House Birmingham after learning about Kaine's illness.

He has undergone four operations as well as an intense round of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Teacher Melanie Harold said: "We have seen Kaine go through school and it has been horrific and very upsetting for everyone to see him get so poorly.

"He is a very bright little boy with so much to offer in class.

"Our teaching assistants got together and decided to do something to raise money and awareness for the places that have helped him and his family.

"We only expected to raise a few hundred pounds but this has totally blown us away - it's amazing."

The Highbridge Road school raised the money via a sponsored walk, fun day, mufti day and bake sales.

Kaine's eight-year-old sister, Kacey-Jo Wakefield, who is currently in year three, has been visiting him regularly along with their older brother Zachery, aged 11.

She said: "I love Kaine lots and he is a very patient and nice brother to me.

"He enjoys playing on his tablet and Xbox and hopefully he will make a quick recovery and be back home with us soon."

A special assembly was held to reveal the total money raised for both charities.

Katie West, regional fundraiser for Birmingham Children's Hospital, said: "From such a small school to raise a huge amount like this is wonderful and we are extremely proud of everyone's hard work."

Assistant Head Teacher, Janet Price, said: "Kaine and his family are incredibly brave and we knew we had to get fundraising to support both charities," she added.
