The footballing legend, who was Dudley born and bred, would have celebrated his 79th birthday today.
The statue has been moved to a more prominent position in the town centre as part of a £6.7 million revamp.
The hundreds who turned out for the event were entertained by footballing trick star Colin Nell before the statue was unveiled.
Scores of Manchester United fans travelled to the town for the service.
One of those, Brian Mulholland, said: ""This will become a site of pilgrimage for Manchester United fans."
