A smash between two cars closed two lanes on the M6 northbound between Junction 8 for the M5 and Junction 9 at Wednesbury at around 6.30am.

Motorists were delayed by up to an hour, and queues were caused on surrounding roads in West Bromwich and Great Barr.

The restrictions were in place for about half an hour but the problems continued throughout rush hour. No-one was believed to be badly injured in the crash.

A broken down vehicle caused hour-long delays on the M6 southbound from Junction 11 for Cannock up to Junction 14 for Stafford North.

The M54 also became congested as drivers waited to get on the M6.

There were also delays of up to 30 minutes through roadworks as part of the £176 million Bilston Urban Village Project.

The work, which started two weeks ago, is expected to last for two months includes 24-hour closures stopping traffic entering from the Black Country Route.
