Driver dies after being thrown from van and trapped underneath it in West Bromwich crash

A driver has died after being thrown from his van and trapped underneath it during a crash in West Bromwich.

The Mercedes Sprinter Van crashed into a parked vehicle before hitting a tree in Wiltshire Way.

Firefighters freed the trapped man who had received multiple serious injuries, allowing ambulance staff to begin resuscitation at the scene.

The 42-year-old received advanced life support before being taken to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, following the crash shortly before 10.40pm last night.

Sadly the driver died during the night.

Sergeant Alan Wood, from the Regional Collision Investigation Unit, said: "As with all fatal road traffic collisions, police have started an investigation and we are trying to build a picture of what happened last night. I would urge anyone who saw what actually happened to contact us.

He added: "This is obviously a difficult time for the man's family, out thoughts are with them and they are being supported by specially trained officers."

The road remained closed until 2.30am this morning while investigations took place.
