Wolverhampton bus lane fines fall by £300k in one month

The amount of money brought in by bus lane cameras in Wolverhampton has reduced by nearly £300,000 after a drop in the number of fines handed out in the second month of use.

The bus lane cameras, brought in by the city council in June to catch out motorists using bus lanes, brought in £360,000 in fines between June 15 and July 18.

In the following month, £61,147 worth of fines were dished out.

Wolverhampton council spokesman Oliver Bhurrut said: "The reduction in the number of fines suggests people are heeding the message that driving in bus lanes is not acceptable.

"We hope the new bus lane cameras continue to be as effective going forward."

The cameras are in place at Willenhall Road, Stafford Street, Wolverhampton Road, Wednesfield Road and Cleveland Street.

Drivers are fined if they drive in a bus lane for 'an unreasonably long distance', deemed 20 metres by the council.

More will be brought in at other city bus lanes in the coming months.
