Crews were called to the Zion Christian Centre in Little Cornbow. At its height eight crews were at the scene.

Rev Leon Evans arrived shortly after 5.15am to find a fire in the main auditorium of the church building.

Rev Evans said: "There is extensive damage to the auditorium and also smoke damage and water damage to all the front block of the building."

It is believed the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

More than 500 people had been set to come to the church for the morning service, which had to be cancelled.
