VIDEO AND PICTURES: Reece hits road for 106-mile trek in memory of Stephen Sutton
[gallery] A teenager has set off on the challenge of a lifetime to walk 106 miles from his school in Burntwood to the bright lights of Blackpool in memory of Stephen Sutton.
Reece Young has taken on the epic journey to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust after he was inspired by the late Stephen, who attended the same school.
The 14-year-old set off yesterday, accompanied for the first four miles by Stephen's mother Jane Sutton, who has taken over her son's fundraising campaign.
Reece started his walk outside the front gates of his school, Chase Terrace Technology College. He notched up 24 miles before taking an hour's lunch and was expecting to reach his first-night stopover 40 miles away in Newcastle-under-Lyme by 8pm last night.
Sister Zoe Jones, aged 30, said: "He has received so much support from people driving past and messages on Facebook."
Reece, of May Close, Burntwood is taking on the challenge as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and set an original target of £106 – a pound for every mile.
However he had raised more than £900 before setting off and during the first six hours of his walk the fund had passed the £1,800 mark.
This morning he was nearing £3,000.
Reece said: "I was a bit nervous on Thursday night before I started but I was also really excited to get going."
Jane Sutton will be joining him on his final leg from Wigan to Blackpool Tower tomorrow.
