Wednesfield pub car park to be replaced by shops
A controversial proposal to build two shops on the car park of a Black Country pub has been approved.
Some 130 people signed a petition against NewRiver Retail's plans for the stores shops next to the Ashmore pub in Griffiths Drive, Wednesfield.
Last year, residents and developers became embroiled in a bitter battle over the pub, which was bought by NewRiver as part of a 202-pub deal with Marstons Brewery.
The company, which specialises in the UK food and retail sector, agreed to keep the pub running after a campaign led by residents had succeeded in having it listed as of community value.
Councillor Phil Bateman, who represents Wednesfield North, said: "The application has obviously been discussed by the planning committee who have decided it is suitable to be passed but despite the job opportunities that will be brought from this plan, it is still controversial.
"It seems to have divided the community in Ashmore Park as far as I can see."
Padda Brewster, who ran a successful campaign to save the pub last year, said: "Realistically, this was always going to happen, it was part of the terms we agreed with NewRiver Retail in order to keep the pub and I think it will be good for local shoppers, who now have more choice as to where to go for groceries. As long as the pub is still going, that is the main thing."
Before the meeting of the Wolverhampton council planning committee, officers had recommended councillors approve the scheme. A 130-name petition and four letters of objection were handed in, with the objections including loss of trade to shops, loss of jobs, increased traffic which will lead to noise and pedestrian safety issues, loss of light and privacy to neighbouring homes.
