IN PICTURES and VIDEO: Major flood breaks out at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital

A major flood has broken out at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Fire crews were called at shortly before 4am this morning after the hospital reported a major burst pipe.

A total of 150,000 litres of water was spilling out every minute into the hospital.

But despite this the flood has only affected basement storage meaning no patient care areas of the hospital have suffered flooding and thus no evacuation has had to take place.

A press release from the hospital stated that 'a small number of patients' had experienced delays to their treatment but 'the Trust is not anticipating that any procedures will have to be cancelled as a result.'

Four fire engines from Bournbrook, Woodsgate, Ladywoods and Highgate have attended the scene where they have split the flood into three sectors.

It is reported that the first two sectors have been dealt with while there is still some 5,000 litres of water left in the third sector.
