Michael Nock, aged 44, from Featherstone, and David Harvey Smith, aged 49, from Cannock were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at 10am on Wednesday morning. Mr Nock, of Speedwell Gardens, was riding a red BMW when it collided with a blue and white Suzuki ridden by Mr Smith, of St James Road.

In a brief statement, Mr Smith's family spoke of their grief and gratitude for the support they had received from relatives and friends.

The statement read: "Thank you to friends and family for their continued support at this difficult and stressful time following the sudden and tragic death of our beloved father, partner, grandfather and friend.

"We request that we be given time to grieve during this very difficult time.

"David will be missed dearly and words cannot describe our loss."

Police said an investigation into the collision was now under way.

Police have launched an appeal requesting witnesses either to the crash or the lead-up to it to come forward.

A seven-mile stretch of the A5 was closed between Weston-under-Lizard and Gailey for most of the day while a detailed examination of the scene took place.

It was reopened to traffic at around 6.30pm.
