West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to Worcester Road shortly before 11am and sent an ambulance, a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle, a paramedic area support officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Staffordshire to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find a woman lying unconscious in the road and a car that had suffered damage to the windscreen.

"The woman, believed to be in her 70s, was treated for a significant head injury and fractures to both of her legs. She was immobilised with the use of a neck collar and spinal board.

"She was then airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and was still unconscious on arrival. Unfortunately, her condition is thought to be extremely serious.

"The driver of the car, a man, was uninjured in the incident which has led to significant traffic disruption in the area."
