Boy, 16, arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after workmen seriously injured in Coseley

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after two engineers were reportedly hit by a car and seriously injured as they worked in Coseley.

Initial information suggests that two telecoms engineers were injured as they worked on a communications box. The impact of the car caused damage within the box.

The condition of the men ? believed to be in their twenties - is described as serious with one airlifted to hospital and described as "critical".

Two people who were in the grey Citroen Picasso which was involved in the crash fled the scene. It is not yet known whether the car is stolen.

Emergency services remain at scene of a collision which happened shortly after 11.55am this morning at the junction of Jack Holden Avenue and Robert Wynd, in Woodcross, Wolverhampton.

Sergeant Paul Hughes from the force's collision investigation unit, said: "Enquiries are underway as to what happened. The collision took place in a very busy area and there will have been a number of people who witnessed what took place- I need these people to contact officers on 101."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find two men with serious injuries. It is believed they were working on an electrical communications box when they were struck by a vehicle.

"One man, believed to be in his late 20s, suffered serious head injuries and received emergency treatment from medics at the scene. Due to his serious injuries the man was anaesthetised by the trauma doctor and was then airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Major Trauma Unit for further treatment. "Unfortunately the man's condition was described as critical.

"A second man, believed to be in his early 20s, suffered serious facial and arm injuries. He also received treatment at the scene from medics and was transferred by land ambulance to Russells Hall Hospital for further treatment.

"Both hospital had been pre alerted to the patient's arrival and their serious injuries.

"The air ambulance landed in playing fields adjacent to the incident."

Drivers and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area while the investigation continues. Local diversions are in place.
