Construction is taking place on the new centre, which opens in November. It will be the biggest of its kind in the Midlands.

The 30 new nursing staff will be a mixture of local people finishing their training and some from overseas.

Chief executive David Loughton said having the new department will be 'fantastic'.

He said: "We have already moved to take on an extra 30 staff when the department opens so it is a much better patient experience.

"The present department is not fit for purpose. The staff do a magnificent job, but having a new department will be fantastic."

He added that university students were guaranteed a job – providing they get their qualifications.

He added: "Providing they make the grade they are guaranteed a job and we ave also made it very clear that for the foreseeable future that will continue.

"No matter how many nurses we recruit from overseas there will be jobs for those that are completing the training."

It is hoped the state-of-the-art centre will end the hospital's A&E crisis, which is down to extra patients coming from Staffordshire in the wake of Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust being dissolved.

Bosses have also taken over the running of Cannock Chase Hospital and are sending all non-emergency surgery there to free up space at New Cross.

Record patient numbers have poured through New Cross's doors since since the dissolution of Mid-Staffordshire, with the hospital having its busiest ever day in A&E this month.

June 15 – Monday last week, was the record-breaking day.

As well as the 413 patients coming to A&E, there were also another 153 attendances at the trust's walk-in centres on the same day.

The hospital last had its busiest ever day when 397 patients attended on April 27. In fact, April was its busiest-ever month on record, with 10,156 A&E attendances.

When the new Emergency Centre opens, patients will be told which department they should be treated in, rather than them having to wait in the A&E department with relatively minor injuries.

It is being built next to the Heart and Lung Centre by Kier Construction and will link directly with the current hospital.

The cost has risen from the original estimate of £28 million.

Eight thousand extra patients visited the A&E unit in 2014/15 than the year before.

In total 117,000 patients visited A&E between April 2014 and March 2015, up from 109,000 in 2013/14.
