Proposals for the 450,000 sq ft centre were submitted to Sandwell Council for approval. It will be built on land near to Junction 9 of the M6 and create managerial and office-based jobs, in addition to full-time warehouse roles operating on a three-shift basis, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Wednesbury councillor Elaine Costigan has welcomed the development as great news for the town.

She said: "This is fantastic news – things are looking up for Wednesbury. These are very welcome and much-needed jobs."

The planning applications says: "An additional facility is required in the Midlands region to service existing and planned supermarkets."

Bosses from supermarket looked at a number of sites for the development but opted for Wednesbury because it wanted to access a 'sufficiently large employment pool'.

Sandwell Council's recruitment team will be working with Lidl to ensure jobs are secured for residents in the surrounding area.
