The officers were responding to a 999 call when they were involved in a smash with a transit van. The police car crashed into railings and rolled onto its roof, leaving a female officer trapped inside the vehicle.

The male driver was able to free himself after the smash at the junction of Bilston Road and Steelhouse Lane, at around 11:30pm last night.

Both officers were taken to hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and discharged.

The van driver, a 49-year-old man, was seen by ambulance crews at the scene, but required no further treatment.

The road remained closed for several hours while officers worked to establish the cause of the collision and to clear the wreckage.

Inspector John Pickard, from Wolverhampton Police, said: "Although badly shaken, we are thankful that our officers escaped with only minor injuries."

Anyone who witnessed the collision should call police on 101.
