The 47-year-old was tended to by passers-by until medics arrived following the incident on Saturday.

The father of eight had just safely got his children into his green Peugeot 206. His children and his 34-year-old wife, who was also with them, were taken to hospital with minor injuries and shock.

Mr Hinton, from Halesowen, died in hospital from his injuries on Sunday, a day after he was struck by a red Volkswagen Polo on Oakham Road in Dudley.

PC Stuart Allen, from West Midlands Police, said: "Mr Hinton's family have been left devastated by their loss and are understandably at the very early stages in the grieving process. Our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time."

The driver of the Polo ? a 35-year-old local man - was uninjured and has been interviewed by police.

The road remained closed for several hours while emergency services attended the scene.

Anyone with information which may help investigators understand what happened, should call police on 101.
