Suspected lorry fire blocks busy Wolverhampton road
A busy Wolverhampton route was blocked last night after a suspected lorry fire.
One lane of Oxford Street in Bilston was closed near The Oak & Ivy pub while fire crews responded to reports of smoke coming from the tyres of a lorry.
Ten firefighters from Willenhall and Bilston attended the scene at around 8pm. They used a hose reel jet to cool the lorry's brakes, which had overheated.
A recovery team was called to the scene to move the lorry. Oxford Street fully re-opened after around 20 minutes.
West Midlands Fire spokesman Neil Spencer said the incident had not been as serious as at first thought.
"Initially we received a report of a lorry fire, but when fire crews attended the scene it became apparent it was a false alarm.
"The brakes on the lorry had overheated, causing smoke to come from the area around the tyres. The driver was advised not to try and move the vehicle due to the overheating."
